Can the Value of Retired Technology Offset ITAD Costs?
ITAD has both service costs and asset value
Secure pickup, labor, inventory, sanitization, reporting, transportation, and recycling create real project costs. At the same time, some retired laptops, servers, storage, networking equipment, and mobile devices may retain resale or parts value.
The strongest programs evaluate these two sides separately instead of assuming every load should be free or every asset should be recycled.
What determines recoverable value?
- Age, configuration, and manufacturer
- Functional and cosmetic condition
- Completeness, accessories, and account locks
- Current market demand
- Testing, repair, logistics, and selling costs
Security comes first. An asset should not be remarketed until data risk has been resolved and the customer’s ownership terms permit resale.
Common value arrangements
Depending on the project, recoverable value may be handled through an agreed service offset, revenue share, outright purchase, or standard disposition arrangement. The contract should state when ownership transfers, which costs are deducted, how value is calculated, and what reporting the customer receives.
